3.9 Reduce the number of deaths and illnesses caused by pollution

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

3.9 By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.

  • Madrid SDG

M 3.9 By 2030, increase the percentage of food samples analysed that comply with regulations.

M 3.10 By 2030, 99% of tap water samples will be fit for consumption.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

A study of the condition of the soil will be carried out according to the activities in the area, identifying the activities that could leave dangerous pollutants in the soil to be cleaned up in the project implementation phase.

What is the impact?

The implementation of new uses in the area occupied by Madrid Nuevo Norte involves activities to eliminate soil contaminants, reducing the total contaminated area and the population exposed to pollutants, and thus the risk to health. It should be noted that part of the untreated area may be reduced because the modification plans for some plots, as is the case of the Chamartín station area, have not yet been fully developed. This means that there may be changes of use that require cleanup.

Operational indicator

Proportion of the area with activities that could potentially pollute the soil (active or not) with respect to the total area.
