12.5 Reduce waste generation

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

    12.4 By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimise their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

    12.5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

    M 12.2 By 2030, continuously increase the volume of recyclable materials recovered in the city of Madrid.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

Madrid Nuevo Norte proposes a comprehensive approach to the cycle of materials and management of waste, from the construction phase and also the waste that the operation of the city will generate in the future. A pneumatic collection system will also be installed for optimised management of urban waste after the new neighbourhoods are occupied.

What is the impact?

The installation of a permanent recycling and disposal point in Madrid Nuevo Norte will encourage correct disposal of Solid Urban Waste (SUW) and improve access to waste disposal systems for the residents of the Fuencarral - El Pardo district who live near Madrid Nuevo Norte, having a positive impact on the indicators of targets 12.4 and 12.5.
