12.2 Management and sustainable use of natural resources

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

12.2 By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

Madrid Nuevo Norte proposes a comprehensive approach to the cycle of materials and management of waste, from the construction phase and also the waste that the operation of the city will generate in the future. A pneumatic collection system will be installed for optimised management of urban waste after the new neighbourhoods are occupied.

What is the impact?

The execution of urban regeneration projects always has a negative impact in terms of waste generation and a larger material footprint. For this reason, Madrid Nuevo Norte has created a Circular Economy Master Framework to mitigate the impact that is generated. This Master Framework includes the optimisation of the cycle of materials during the construction phase and the activity phase. The most notable and ambitious initiative in this plan is the Construction and Demolition Waste Management and Recovery Strategy for the execution of the approach planned in the Specific Modification of the City Plan of Madrid Nuevo Norte. This is expected to reduce the carbon footprint by 75%, and save EUR 6.5 M in site waste management, and will also contribute to the circular economy and the sustainable use of materials with a positive impact on target 12.2.

Operational indicator
