2.4. Sustainable food production

2.a. Enhance agricultural productive capacity

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

2.4 By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

2.a Increase investment, including through enhanced international cooperation, in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension services, technology development and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural productive capacity in developing countries, in particular least developed countries.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

Agricultural production spaces will be created in public areas with urban vegetable gardens and a historic agricultural livestock route, and in private areas with vegetable gardens in gardens and rooftops of agricultural-green buildings.

What is the impact?

Urban vegetable gardens promote biodiversity and guarantee food quality. In addition to the impact on SDG 2, these green spaces also reduce heat islands, improving air quality, which is assessed in SDG 13. They can also serve as a destination for organic waste in the form of compost, favouring the circular economy. They are a friendly alternative for the naturalisation of the surroundings and, in turn, serve as spaces for coexistence and socialisation in Madrid Nuevo Norte.

Operational indicator

Number of urban vegetable gardens and area of urban vegetable gardens per inhabitant.
