6.5 Implement integrated water resources management

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

6.5 By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

With 5,000 m2 or more of landscaped areas, Madrid Nuevo Norte has been designed to reuse water for the irrigation of these green spaces.

What is the impact?

The ambitious urban regeneration project of Madrid Nuevo Norte has advantages for the urban environment, air quality and temperature. However, maintaining green spaces in a dry climate like Madrid's, despite the use of native species, requires the application of irrigation water, which can have a negative impact on the Water Footprint. For this reason, the Madrid Nuevo Norte project has developed the Sustainable Drainage Master Framework, which considers two water reuse scenarios that significantly improve Madrid's current reused water capacity. This improvement in the efficiency of water collection and subsequent use will have a positive impact on target 6.5.

Operational indicator
