6.4 Increase water-use efficiency

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

    6.4 By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

  • Madrid SDG

    M 6.2 Extend the reclaimed water network and increase the number of uses and the volume of reclaimed water used with respect to drinking water.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

In Madrid Nuevo Norte, rainwater collection, storage and treatment systems will be used in buildings, open spaces and roads to increase water-use efficiency. The irrigation networks to be installed in the urban development projects that each domain will develop must promote water-use efficiency. It has been estimated that these actions will reduce the water footprint by 48%.

What is the impact?

The improvement of sanitation, water use and treatment facilities in Madrid Nuevo Norte will save water through indirect techniques aimed at consumption. This new district will encourage and promote a positive effect on the city's total water consumption, moving closer and closer to the UN recommendations.
