15.1 Sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

15.1 By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.

  • Madrid SDG

M 15.1 By 2030, ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the city's forests and green spaces by increasing tree cover.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

Madrid Nuevo Norte plans to allocate 18 plots larger than one hectare to basic green zones, in addition to creating a green artery that will connect Madrid Nuevo Norte to El Pardo and promoting the use of plant species adapted to Madrid's climate.

What is the impact?

The planning of green spaces, the green corridor and the use of native species or species adapted to the climate of Madrid for the development of Madrid Nuevo Norte promotes the existence of micro-ecosystems for pollinators and other native animal species, helping conserve the ecosystems characteristic of the bioclimatic stage and having a positive impact on Madrid target 15.1 and SDG target 15.1.

Operational indicator

Green spaces per inhabitant (m2/inhabitant).
