11.b Implement policies for inclusion, resource efficiency and mitigation of the risk of disasters

Target description

The indicators that assess the impact of these actions by Madrid Nuevo Norte were prepared based on the 169 targets associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets taken on by the Madrid City Council and localised for the city.

  • Sustainable Development GOALS

11.b By 2020, substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, and develop and implement, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, holistic disaster risk management at all levels.

  • Madrid SDG

M 11.13 By 2030, carry out in the city of Madrid all of the actions included in the Flood Mitigation Study, as well as the execution of new solutions based on Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), to minimise the harmful effects of floods and improve the city's sewerage system.

Madrid Nuevo Norte project actions

Sustainable urban rainwater drainage systems with different capacities will be installed in the following project areas of Madrid Nuevo Norte: Central Business District (26,345 m3), Malmea (27,053 m3) and Las Tablas (7,948 m3).

What is the impact?

The installation of SUDS with an annual drainage capacity of 61,346 m3 will contribute positively to Madrid's target 11.13, reducing the risk of flood damage in the city, increasing the ability to adapt to the effects of climate change and disaster resilience, thus having a positive impact on target 11.b.

Operational indicator

Design volume (m3) of the installed Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).

Despite accounting for just 0.6% of the surface area of the city of Madrid, the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems planned in Madrid Nuevo Norte will double the volume of storage available in SUDS in the city's current scenario, and will contribute 12.3% to the achievement of the target volume of SUDS installed in the city of Madrid by 2030. The implementation of SUDS in Madrid Nuevo Norte will reduce the volume of rainwater discharged into the drainage network by 69% compared to an equivalent conventional system, which translates into a reduction of more than 376,000 m3 in a typical rainfall year.
